Since my son and daughter attend public school, I always make a point to talk about “how is school?” or “What happen today in school?” with them. That allows me to find out their activities and learning trajectory.
Yesterday, my son told me that his teacher was very angry with them, because some of students did poorly in their Science homework. Finally she threw all the workbooks in the air and walked out of class.
“What did you do then?” I asked him, “Well, we just have another free session.”
I thought for while. It is certainly not easy task for a primary teacher. The class size is big, and the students are active, only one teacher is in charge of each period of session. One session of period is normally two hours, if there are one or two naughty students, the teacher’s attention will have to divert to them, not to mention giving lecture, exercise and carrying out any disciplining. No wonder teacher sometimes also lost temple.
We used to homeschool my two elder children, both system, homeschool and public school have its pros and cons. I remember that, many times, when I was the primary educator, I also was frustrated too. Sometimes, it was better to just had to walk away for while, to let myself and my children cool down.
Now for earlier mentioned reasons, we decide to send our children to public school, we are aware of the disadvantages comparing to homeschool. At the same time, we do appreciate the advantage of public school. My children often tell me that they have fun in school, chess club, PE, and children day etc. As for learning, I keep close track.
I wish that teachers in school will have more support and more communication with parents. Smaller class, more teaching assistant staffs, shorter period …. Well, these are the wishing list we hope, most important, as parents, we have to assure that we are teachers too. ALL THE TIME.
