Breastfeeding

I don’t need to reemphasize the importance of breastfeeding. (There is a lot of information available). What I want to share with you is we need to do all things with balance.

Paul, our first baby certainly benefited from being a first child, he had all the attentions to his own, at the same time he also suffered our unintended ignorance of being first time parents. Breastfeeding was one of these kinds.

After reading all the benefits of breastfeeding, I was determined to breastfeed my baby for as long as he wants. It was not a smooth path, through my perseverance; I managed to success in sole breastfeed Paul. He was chubby and striving well. After six month, I introduced solid food to him, he took it reasonable well. When he started to walk, his chubbiness disappeared. I was still breastfeeding him, did not supplement any other milk formula.

About 1 and half year old, he actually became quite skinny. My paediatrician observed this change on one of visits, she asked me what kind of milk he drank? It seemed to her he did not get enough milk.

I was shocked; I thought mother’s milk was the best for the child. The doctor told me, yes; however, after one year of baby born, the mother milk becomes diluted and does not provide adequate nutrition value for baby’s growth. That is why they recommend starting supplement milk at one year old.

After I started to supplement other milk, Paul soon became strong but never chubby again.

That was never happened to my other children for I had learnt from my own experience. Therefore, dear mothers, when you read some books advocating certain beliefs, though it may be good in general views, you need to discern according to your own unique experience. Never be dogmatic, or stubborn to making necessary changes. After all, motherhood is the learning process for all mothers.

Ref Breastfeeding July 6, 2007,

As an experienced breastfeeding mother. I would like to comment on the advice your doctor gave you. Yes doctors are qualified but they arent necessarily always correct plus they are only human and have personal opinions on things which can effect their advice. Whilst it is true that after one year of breastfeeding your milk may not be sufficient in providing all the nutriants your child needs this is only the case where the child is not receiving any other types of food. There is absolutely NO NEED to ever suppliment your breast milk with formula milk if your child is eating solids. At that age solid food should be making up any lack of nutrients not formula milk.
